ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate influence of the structure of Nigerian English on senior secondary school students’ achievement in writing skills in Ovia East Edo State. Three research question were raised for the study.

Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The target population for the study is all the senior secondary school students, starting from ss1 to ss3. The total population of senior secondary school students in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State is 6,254 5610 in all the 28 schools. A simple random sampling technique was utilized to select 90 respondents (Students) from three (3) randomly selected schools in the Ovia North East Local Government Area, which are 30 respondents (students) in total.

The major findings of the study revealed that Nigeria English negatively affects secondary school students writing ability to express themselves effectively, it was shown that exposure to Nigerian English literature and media improves secondary school students writing skills. Finally, it was revealed that the students frequently encounter Nigerian English expressions, such as Pidgin English or Nigerian idioms in school. From the finding of the study, it recommended that The Nigerian government should improve its language policy and accommodate Nigerian Pidgin as Nigeria's lingua franca and a second official language of the country. Nigerian Pidgin has no stable orthography. There are different variants of the language. Linguists should endeavor to collate these variants and developed a standard form of the language.
