ABSTRACT
This research project is titled" Influence of the language of social media on the English performance of Secondary School students in Benin metropolis". The major aim of this study is to ascertain the influence of the social media language on the Secondary School Students of English Language, in which Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study.
The descriptive survey research design was employed. The total population of the study comprises of 305 teachers out of which 50 teachers were selected using the simple sampling technique to ensure the attainment of the general aim, and the questionnaires were tested, validated and adopted as the instrument for data collection. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using mean score analysis and standard deviation analysis. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the research instrument.
The findings of this study, revealed that social media allows students to engage in real-life language usage by covering a wide range of registers, idioms, and colloquial expressions. The dynamic aspect of social media enables learners to adapt and absorb language in a variety of circumstances, ultimately improving their overall language ability. It was recommended that teachers who are not well informed about the importance of social media, should be sensitized, students should be enlightening on the benefits of using social media to their English language to enable them consciously learn while using it and also parents should guide the students usage of social media is for majorly educational purposes.
