ABSTRACT

This study investigates the complex relationship between internet usage and youth crime rates among the youth population residing in Benin City metropolis, Edo State, Nigeria. The research focuses on understanding the impact of internet activities, such as social media engagement, online gaming, exposure to violent content, and peer influences, on criminal behaviors among Nigerian youths aged 15 to 29. Through a survey, data was collected from a representative sample of youths in Benin City to explore their nuances of internet use patterns, the role of online interactions in shaping behaviors, and the potential protective factors that mitigate the risk of involvement in criminal activities. The findings suggest that while the internet offers numerous opportunities for education and social connection, it also presents challenges, including cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, and the potential for online conflicts. The study underscores the need for digital literacy programmes, parental guidance, and policies that promote responsible internet use among youths. Ultimately, this research contributes to a better understanding of the internet’s influence on youth crime rates in a specific Nigerian context and offers insights into strategies for fostering safer and more beneficial online experiences for young people.
