ABSTRACT
This research examines how television programming affects family values and contributes to the decline of society in Oredo LGA of Edo state, Nigeria. Television being an influential form of mass media in shaping public opinion and attitudes. The work has the following objectives; to investigate the types of television content consumed by the residents and its effect on family values and societal degradation, also to suggest possible ways to mitigate negative influences. Guided by the Agenda Setting and Social Responsibility Theories, the study made use of survey research method with 400 residents as the sample size. The findings suggest that news and current affairs are the most popular genres of television content consumed by residents, and a significant proportion of the respondents believe that television content can influence behavior in real life. The study however concluded that good or bad impact of television rest on the contents and purpose. As part of recommendations, the study encourages responsible media practices that minimize the airing of unguided contents that could contribute to societal vices as a way of mitigating negative effects. Encouraging television content that reflects the values of the society could positively impact minimizing societal problems.
