INFLUENCE OF TEACHER'S EFFECTIVENESS ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of teachers’ effectiveness on students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study comprised of 7776 students and 844 teachers from 14 public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample for the study was 776 students and 84 teachers from seven public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. This constitute 10% of the total population. Purposive sampling technique was adopted. The research instrument used for data collection was questionnaire and checklist titled “ “Teachers’ Effectiveness Questionnaire (TEQ) and Students’ Academic Performance Checklist (SAPC)”. Data collected were analyzed using t-test statistic tool at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed the level of teachers effectiveness in public secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State was high, the level of students academic performance in public secondary school was high, there is a significant relationship between teachers effectiveness and students academic performance in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, there is no significant difference in relationship between teachers’ effectiveness and students academic performance by sex and there is no significant difference in relationship between teachers’ effectiveness and students academic performance by school location. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made: Efforts should be made to train and keep teachers on the job, the principal should create positive school climate to promote teachers effectiveness in school and government should provide enough facilities for effective teaching and learning in schools.
