ABSTRACT
This study examined the influence of Chemistry teacher motivation on academic performance of students in secondary schools. Teacher motivation as a general term applying to the entire class of drives, desires, needs, and similar forces initiated for teachers, in order to make them to act in an academically productive manner.
This study adopted a survey research design sampling technique In order to achieve the purpose of this study, thirty research questions were raised. The sample for the study consists of sixty (60) respondents which were selected using the simple random sampling method. Data was collected with the aid of questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the instrument were ascertained using the exert judgment and test-retest procedures. Simple percentage and frequency count were used to analyse collected data.
Based on the findings of the study it was ascertained that some of the factors affecting the teachers motivations in secondary schools include: lack of incentives and rewards like wages, low recognition by the Government, allowances, delay in salary payment, delay in promotion, inadequate motivation bad leadership styles of principals. Finally, it was recommended amongst others that teachers should be paid salaries comparable with other The Nigeria government under/through the Ministry of Education should payspecial attention to increasing teachers’ salaries because the majority of them (teachers)complained about the inadequacy of their salary to meet their needs which will increase theirmorale to teach.
