Abstract
This study to the influence of students- teachers relationship on students academic performance in secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. This study sought to find out the level of student – teacher relationship in senior secondary schools, the extent student – teacher relationship influence students motivation/ willingness to learn in senior secondary schools and if there is a significant relationship between student – teacher relationship and students performance in secondary senior schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised and answered using questionnaire.
The population of this study consists of the twenty-eight (28) public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State with a total of 5, 052 (five thousand, and fifty two) students. The sample of 100 students was used in this study and they were drawn from four randomly selected public secondary schools in the Local Government Area representing the entire populationThe data collected were analyzed using percentage, mean and standard deviation. The findings from the research revealed that there is a high level of student – teacher relationship in senior secondary schools, student – teacher relationship influence students motivation/willingness to learn in secondary schools, student – teacher relationship influence school attendance among students in secondary schools and there was significant relationship between between student – teacher relationship and students performance in secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Based on the findings it was recommended that Teachers should establish rapport and trustworthiness with students by being fair, caring, respectful and enthusiastic and there should be co-operation between the home and the school so that the teacher will know the student’s home background. This will enable the teacher to solve problems of poor relationship due to personality
