ABSTRACT
The study examined influence of SIWES on business education students’ skill acquisition in University of Benin. Five research questions guided the study.
Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised 400 level business education students totaling 120. There was no sampling as the entire population students of Business education students were used. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts. Chronbach alpha statistics was used to compute the reliability of the instrument which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.73. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation.
The study revealed that the influence of SIWES on business education skills acquisition in University of Benin was in the area of management skills, accounting skills, computer skills, entrepreneurial skills and marketing skills. Consequently, it was recommended that students should be encouraged to fully participate in SIWES so as to sustain their management skill acquisition. Furthermore, internship organizations should incentivize the SIWES programme to sustain students accounting skills acquisition. Finally, recommendations were made for further studies such as determinants influencing students’ participation in SIWES.
