ABSTRACT

Students academic performance is a major discourse as it indicates how well the educational process has achieved it's goals. Academic Performance is influenced by several factors which comprises of variables related to the student as well as those that are extrinsic to the students, Parents being the primary caregiver of the students have a major role to play in determining the educational outcome of their wards. This study is therefore aimed at investigating the influence of parents Socio-Economic Status on senior secondary students in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were formulated to guide this study.

A descriptive survey research method was adopted in conducting the study. The population comprised of two hundred and forty students. A sample of 60 students were randomly selected from three senior secondary school. A structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data collected was analyzed using percentage and mean. Criterion mean of 2.5 was raised by adding the assigned values of responses and dividing it with the total number of responses options which is the summation of 4+3+2+1=10÷4=2.50. Therefore any score below 2.5 means disagree while 2.5 above means agree.

Findings from the research showed that parents level of education, financial income, educational status and economic status were reported to influence students academic performance. On the other hand, family size of students had no significant relationship with the academic performance of students. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that parents should strive to provide essential needs for their wards in order to enhancer their learning, irrespective of parents occupation, there is need for them to pay adequate attention to their children's Academic progress and non governmental agencies should complement government efforts by organizing seminars and competitions for students to as to stimulate learning among students.
