ABSTRACT
This study investigated the Influence of Societal Values on the educational attainment of Secondary School students with reference to secondary school students in University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School, in University of Benin, Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide this study. The Instrument used in collecting data for this study was a questionnaire.
The population of this study is comprised of Three hundred and eighteen students (318) of the University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School (UDSS), University of Benin, Edo State. The questionnaire was approved by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in measurement and evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was evaluated using the test-retest method. The data generated for this study was analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics (tables and percentages).
The findings from this study revealed that societal values have significant influence on the educational attainment of secondary school students. It was also revealed that all the sources of societal values contribute in their own way, to the educational attainment of students, as they all are equally important.
It was recommended that since societal values play significant roles in education, integration of values into the curriculum could enhance and foster a positive learning environment. It was also recommended that establishment of programs that would encourage active involvement of families and communities in the student’s academic journey.
