INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL NEWTWORKING ON BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSRACT

The main purpose of this study gives a general overview of the influence of social networking on Business Education student’s academic performance in University of Benin. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. xi A survey research design was adopted for the purpose of the study. Using the random sampling technique, a total number of ninety-one respondents were selected from the four levels of Business Education students in university of Benin. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. Data collected was analysed using the mean and standard deviation. A total of 21 questions were raised from the research question. The questionnaire instrument was validated by three experts from the department of vocational and technical Education including the supervisor. It was reliably tested by administering 20 copies of the questionnaire were administered using the test-retest method. A coefficient of 0.69 was obtained. The data collected from the field were analyzed using mean (x) and Standard Deviation (SD) statistics for the research questions using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The following were the findings: that Whatsapp distract students from their books , the constant notification and message divert their attention away for their studies leading to procrastination and reduced study time. Facebook which reduces the time they spend reading their books, thus affecting their seriousness and concentration on their book work. Students spend much time on their laptop, phones to check and watch videos on Instagram and Tiktok. Based on the forgoing, it was recommended that students should be enlightened on the benefits of using Whatsapp for academic purposes Students should be sensitized on how to use Facebook facility as a tool to enhance their academic performance .Students should be enlightened on the effect of Instagram and how to properly use it and Students should be educated on how to create short informative videos on social platform that relate to their courses and school activities In conclusion, the use of social networking sites affect the academic performance of Business Education students.
