ABSTRACT

This study assessed Influence of social media on the writing Skills of undergraduates. (A case study of the University of Benin) Four research questions. A review of related literature was carried out in other to explore concepts related to this study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised students across 100 level to 400 level in the Department of Educational Foundations, University of Benin which summed up to one thousand five hundred (1500) students. A sample of 10% of the population amounting to one hundred and fifty (150) students was used for the study Data was collected using a structured questionnaire titled “Influence Of Social Media On The Writing Skills Of Undergraduates” Data collected were analyzed using descriptive (frequency count, simple percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Spearman Rho Correlation coefficient). The findings of the study revealed that; There is a high level of the use of social media among University of Benin students and also social media enhances students’ academic performance It was recommended among others that; Relative orientation on when and how to manage social media by students in the University of Benin and since most of the students’ access social media with a wireless network, authorities in tertiary institutions should establish rules and regulations that will curtail or restrict students’ use of social networking sites during lectures and library sessions.
