ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of social media on the academic educational progress of History students in University of Benin of Edo State. In order to achieve the objectives of the study; Four research questions were raised to guide the study: The study adopted survey research design. The population of this study consisted of History students in the Department of Educational Foundations in the 2021/2022 academic session. The population of History students (100 to 400 level) in the 2021/2022 academic session University of Benin is one thousand, seven hundred and ninety two (1,792). The instrument used for data collection is a structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. The questionnaire was subjected to face validity and validated by three experts in the field of Educational Foundations, Measurement and Evaluation in Education, and English language. The data collected for the study from the respondents were carefully analyzed by the researcher using frequencies and mean score. The findings of the study revealed that non-availability of poor network, to the cost of power supply disrupted the smooth usage of social media sites by students for their academic discourse. The findings of the study also revealed that social media sites such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Youtube were underutilized by students for their academic discourse in History. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others: There should be regular orientation and re-orientation of History students on the use of social media sites for academics6 by authorities of academic enterprises, government authorities that offer History education programmes, should through collaborative effort with Network providers regularly organize seminar, workshops and training of History students as regards the utilization of social media sites resources for teaching and learning to mention but a few.
