INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BUSINESS EDUCATION COURSES IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN DELTA STATE

ABSTRACT

The study assessed the influence of social media on the teaching and learning of business education courses in tertiary institutions in Delta State. Six research questions guided the study and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study was 969 respondents comprising 157 Business Educators in Delta State and 812 final year business education students in tertiary institutions in Delta State in the 2019/2020 academic session.Proportionate sampling technique was adopted for business education students to give 162 students. The instrument for the data collection was used was validated by three experts. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient statistics was used to compute the reliability of the instrument which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.87 for students and 0.86 for business educators. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation. The t-test was used to test the hypotheses. From the results of the analysis, it was concluded that the extent of the usage of social media such as facebook, whatsapp, blog, podcasting, wikis and youtube in influencing the teaching and learning of business education courses in tertiary institutions in Delta State is low. Male and female business educators as well as their students counterparts did not differ significantly in their rating on the on the use of social media in the teaching and learning of business education courses in tertiary institutions in Delta State hence the null hypotheses acceptance. Consequently, it was recommended that institutions should encourage training and retraining of business educators on the use of these social media platforms. Government at all levels should increase budgetary spending on education especially on procurement of ICT related facilities. Furthermore, review of business education curriculum to inculcate more ICT based teaching approach to match pace with the world of work. Finally, recommendations were made for further studies such as influence of social media on students’ academic performance.
