Abstract

This study aimed at investigating social media usage and its impact on student exposure to cybercrime. Three research questions were raised to guide the study.

The design adopted for this study is the survey research design. The sample consisted of 105 respondents (students) randomly selected from each course area in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from 105 (one hundred and five) respondents which were basically students. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two expert in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology The test re-test method was adopted in testing the reliability of the instrument after which the research instruments were administered by the researcher herself. The data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.

Findings revealed that there is a significant difference between gender in levels of social media usage and their exposure to cybercrime. It was also revealed that there is a significant difference between student media usage and exposure to cybercrime based on their course area. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the Students should be educated on the influence of Social media on their academic performance. It was also recommended that Social media users should try as much as possible to customize the security setting of their social media profile during their first-time configuring accounts and also do regular checks of such account afterwards.
