ABSTRACT

This study investigates the influence of social media on adult education students at the University of Benin. The study was guided by the five research questions. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study, with a sample population of 120 students selected using stratified sampling technique. A questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the students, and the data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables , frequencies counts , and simple pecentages. The findings of the study revealed that over 90% of adult education students at the Adult Education student of University of Benin use social media to communicate and interact, with Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram being the most dominant platforms. The study also found that social media has influenced adult education in various ways, such as providing access to online courses, facilitating communication and collaboration among students, and promoting self-directed learning. However, the study also identified potential disadvantages of using social media in adult education, such as issues with internet connectivity, the need for digital literacy skills, and the potential for distraction and information overload.
