ABSTRACT

This study, which examined the influence of social media contents on undergraduate students’ participation in 2020 protest against police brutality in Nigeria. The study was anchored on the tenets of technological determinism theory and public sphere theory. The survey design was adopted, with a 16-item questionnaire to elicit data from 96respondents selected from the total population of 2184 students of University of Benin, through stratified sampling technique. Data obtained were presented and analyzed with the aid of frequency tables and simple percentages. Findings revealed that most students participated in the protest against police brutality due to the influence of social media contents. Also, the study shows that social media contents was effective in mobilizing students to engage in other civic matters. However, majority of the students have a positive perception about the credibility of social media contents during the protest against police brutality.Therefore, the study concludes that social media content was a major factor that motivated most students to get involved in the protest against police brutality, it was however recommended that social media contents that promote violence should not be frequently shared online by students.
