ABSTRACT

This study was designed to analyze the influence of social media abbreviation on students use of language in relation to their writing skills in public senior secondary school in Oredo local Government Area of Edo State. Five research questions were raised to give the study. To What extent do Students understand social media abbreviations? To What extent does social media abbreviation influence the writing performance of secondary school students? What are the aspect of writing are mostly affected by social media? What are the solutions to the problems posed by social media in students writing? Lastly, how will parents and teachers be exposed to the influence of social media abbreviation? The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of the study comprises of students from five secondary schools in Oredo local Government Area of Edo State. A sample size of 100 students were randomly selected from five secondary schools under Oredo local Government Area of Edo State. Questionnaire was the instrument used to elicit information from the respondents.the data collated were analysed using frequency count, percentage, mean and standard deviation.
