INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL INTERACTION ON ATTRITION RATE IN ADULT LITERACY PROGRAMME: A CASE STUDY OF PIONEER ADULT LITERACY CENTRE

ABSTRACT

This study determined the assessed the influence of social interaction on the attrition rate in Adult literacy Education in Egor local government in Edo State. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted of the entire adult learners of Pioneer Education Centre with the total number of five hundred and ninety one (591) adult learners (Proprietor Pioneer Adult Education Centre, 2024). The survey research design was adopted in the study with a population of 591 respondents made up of 291 male and 300 female adult learners from 12 vocational areas. The sample of 355 respondents (60% of the entire population) comprising 175 male and 180 female was drawn using the convenience sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled: Influence of Social Interaction on the Attrition Rate in Adult Literacy Education Questionnaire (SARIIALEQ). It was however subjected to face validity by the researcher’s supervisor and one other expert in the Department of Adult and non-formal Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The reliability was determined using the internal consistency method which was measured using Cronbach alpha statistic. The instrument was administered to business education students in University of Benin who are not part of the sample to be used for this study but are part of the population of the study. However, the instrument yielded an alpha value of 0.76. The data collected were analyzed using mean (x), standard deviation (SD), and two sample independent Fisher z using Statistical Packages for the Social Science (SPSS). The study found that the study found that type of social interactions that exists for adult learners in Pioneer Adult Literacy Centre are basically that of watching, interacting with authors and individual or parallel authoring respectively, the findings of the study found that the level of attrition of adult learners in Pioneer Adult Literacy Centre is relatively low. Based on the findings of the study, the study recommended amongst others: Adult facilitators should to create a safe and non-threatening learning community in which students feel comfortable participating and in which students develop confidence that they can learn and achieve high academic standards, Adult facilitators should be able to converse honestly and address issues such as what are the best ways to teach an adult learner, group of children, or class amongst others.
