ABSTRACT
The investigation on the sleep deprivation affects students' academic performance using a case study of the University of Benin, Edo State, Three (3) research questions served as it's guidelines, and it used a descriptive survey study design. It sought to find out To what extent can sleep deprivation influence the academic performance of students of university of Benin? What are the factors that influence sleep deprivation? How prevalent is sleep deprivation among students of University of Benin? The study employed a sample of PBB, AEB and CIT students in university of Benin, Edo State and a total of (100) respondents which were collected from three course area of university of Benin. The researcher developed questionnaire titled Questionnaire on "sleep deprivation affects students' academic performance using a case study of the University of Benin" was used as the data collection tool. There are fifteen (15) items on the questionnaire. To analyze the data collected, descriptive statistics such as Simple percentage and frequency were used. The study find out that university of Benin undergraduate students have a basic awareness of the benefits of getting enough sleep, Most Students self-impose sleep deprivation because they don't want to sleep during Exam period are the main factors that influence sleep deprivation and sleep deprivation is prevalent among undergraduate students at university of Benin, Edo State. It was suggested that Undergraduate students should be the target audience for educational initiatives such seminars that the school administration plans to hold to highlight x the value of healthy sleeping habits. The study's findings about what makes for high-quality sleep and how sleep deprivation affects mental health ought to be the main topics of these programs. Departments and faculties should work together to launch awareness campaigns that educate the campus community about the negative effects of sleep deprivation. NonGovernmental Organizations (NGOs) ought to integrate sleep-related techniques into their student support programs. Provide therapy or specially created workshops to help students deal with the demands of their studies, reduce stress, and get better sleep
