Abstract
This study examined influence of single parenting on the learning outcomes of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government of Area of Edo State. The study embarked on survey design which was used to source data from the targeted respondents, using percentage analysis. Four objectives were considered which were examine the influence of single parenting on learning outcomes of children in Oredo Local Government Area. Evaluate the perception of students’ attitude towards learning from single family type and learning outcomes. Ascertain whether there is significant difference between learning outcomes of students from single parent homes and those from two parents. Find the significant difference between learning outcomes of girls and boys from single parent homes. There is significant influence of the role of single parent in assisting their children and learning outcomes. The result of the findings revealed that there is significant impact of the perception of students’ attitude towards learning from single family type and learning outcomes. There is significant relationship between learning outcomes of students from single parent homes and age of the child at time of separation. It can be said that single parenting and couples staying together is any a yard stick in measuring the learning outcomes of children, rather the dominant factor of performance of any child lies in the child and the parents whether be it single or couples. The study recommended that spouses should try not to be separated both children and the society hold the combine family dear. Children affected by the negative effect of single parenthood should continue with their lives; however, the lasting effect of divorce shown to follow some children into their adulthood, including their marriage and own children’s life. The negative views of relationships that have been instilled due to exposure of their “childhood” family conflict can cause long term effects on these now adult and their own children avoid it. Government should provide free and compulsory education without social family support and help the less privileged parents with financial support by empowering them.
