ABSTRACT
The study examined the influence of single parents on the academic performance of students in University of Benin, Benin City. A descriptive research design which involves collection of data through the use of questionnaire was adopted to solicit information. Four research questions were used to guide the study, research question one to three was answered using frequency count and percentages while research question four was hypothesized and answered using t-test. The population of the study consists of undergraduate students in Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. The sample of the study comprised of one hundred (100) students. Frequency count and percentages were used to analyze the data collected to answer the research question and the reliability stood at 0.85. The findings revealed that single parenting can influence the academic performance of students in Universities, some of the causes of single parenting include wrong choice in marriage, death of husband or wife, unwanted/early pregnancy, desertion etc., single parenting has some negative effects on the academic performance of students such as physical, emotional, psychological, inability to meet children’s needs which lowers their academic performance and lastly there is a difference between male and female students on the influence of single parenting on the academic performance of students. It was recommended that school counselors should offer the necessary help and psychological support for students from single parent homes to overcome their academic and emotional problems. When the right help is given, they would focus on learning. Also, there is the need to keep enlightening the parents of the importance of the home structure on the life of children. This is necessary so that parents can understand the implications and consequences of parental separation and thus mobilize all resources to curtail the problems arising from the situation.
