ABSTRACT

This study, which evaluated the Influence of Female Students in the University of Benin, Benin city, was anchored on the tenets of the Objectification Theory. The survey design was adopted, with a 12-item questionnaire to elicit data from 280 respondents purposively selected as a case study from the total population of 887 students of the Full Time Mass Communication Department,  University of Benin through the simple  sampling technique. Data obtained were presented and analyzed with the aid of frequency tables and simple percentages. Findings revealed  that the Influence of Sexualised Media on Female Students are low against the backdrop of cultural, ideological, social, and economic differences. Also, the study shows that while the female students are barely influenced, the media is corrupted by so much sexualisation of women rather than their personhood which was categorically placed as demeaning by most respondents. Therefore, the study concludes that the sexualisation of women should be completely eliminated in the contents of the media and other ways of women empowerment should be gainfully used to promote the essence of the personhood of a woman and the function of the mass media in informing, educating, and entertaining. It was however recommended that the government has a crucial role in restructuring the ideal in society and what is normalised through the media by regulating its content and establishing programs on sex education and body positivism.
