ABSTRACT
The demand for rice which is a staple food in Nigeria and most parts of the world exceeds its production capacity. Hence it is important to research on ways in which productivity can be increased and how plant growth stimulators can enhance the productivity of rice. Twenty seeds were placed in petri dish and primed with plant growth stimulators such as sodium nitroprusside (SNP), indole acetic acid (IAA), indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), thiourea and vitamin C with water (H2O) serving as control. The results showed that at the end of the experiment IBA at 100ppm improved germination percentage as against others. IAA at 100ppm showed the most improvement on the the root and shoot length and also seedling vigor. Malondialdehyde activity, total sugar concentration and antioxidizing enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, gluthathione peroxidase activities were also recorded. This research confirmed the possibility that plant growth stimulators can enhance germinability and enhance plant productivity.
