ABSTRACT

This research work is based on the influence of school environment on the academic achievement of junior secondary school social studies students in Edo State. The objective of this research work is to investigate how the school environment influences the Academic Achievement of Social studies Students. The descriptive research design was used for this study. The population of the study comprises of junior secondary school (public) Social studies students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. The samples for the study consist of one hundred and fifty (150) SS1 and SS2 social studies students drawn from three (3) schools. The random sampling technique was used in selecting the schools and fifty(50) Students were selected from each school. The questionnaire was used as theresearch Instrument for the study. The reliability of the instrument was obtained using the Kuder-Richardson formula 20 and a coefficient of .825 was obtained. The instrument was administered to the students in their intact classes, data were collected and analyzed using the simple percentage and tables. The findings from this research indicates that, the school environment can greatly influence the academic achievement of social studies students. This phenomenon includes; school location, the library, laboratory, classroom environment and the teachers. The researcher recommend that Government should provide adequate and conducive classroom for learning, learning equipment should be provided in schools and well maintained, and also their should be an increase in the wages of teachers in order to motivate them to work.
