INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT ON EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The researcher investigated the influence of school environment on effective teaching and learning of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The study is guided by the Constructivist Learning Theory propounded by Vygotsky (1896-1934). The design of the study was a descriptive survey research. The population of the study was the three hundred and eighty-one (381) teachers in twelve (12) public junior and senior public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State and an infinite population of the fifteen (15) students from each of the public junior and senior public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State, while the sample population used was one hundred (100) teachers in the public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State respondents and one hundred and eighty (180) students. The instrument used is a questionnaire validated by my supervisor and two other lectures that are expert in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education. The Cronbach's Alpha method was used to establish the reliability of the instrument. Five research questions are posited for the study.

The findings revealed that there is a significant difference in the mean rating between male and female students in the effective learning in schools in Egor Local Government Area; and that there is a significant difference in the mean rating between male and female teachers in the effective learning in schools in Egor Local Government Area. Considering the research findings, recommendations were made that provision of facilities like modern laboratories, functional libraries, and comfortable classrooms for better teaching and learning; in addition to effective maintenance or renovation of old buildings, chairs, desks, recreational equipment among others should be part and parcel of the schools system.
