ABSTRACT
This study investigated the influence of religious studies on the moral disposition and behaviour of students at the University of Benin. During the course of the research study, three (3) research questions were used to guide the study. The study adopted the survey research design. The population of the study was 158 students, chosen from a population of 316 in the Departments of Religions and Educational Foundations, using purposive simple random sampling techniques. The questionnaire was designed to elicit responses concerning the impact of religious education on ethical understanding, moral decision-making, and respect for diverse viewpoints. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts from the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The findings revealed that Religious Studies significantly enhance understanding of ethical principles, aid in discerning right from wrong, shape responses to moral dilemmas, broaden perspectives on moral issues, and improve respect for diverse viewpoints. However, challenges include a lack of qualified instructors, insufficient resources, perceived lower value of Religious Studies, diverse student backgrounds, and inadequate funding. To address these, respondents recommended modern teaching methodologies, faculty training programs, more resources, interdisciplinary approaches, and extracurricular activities like seminars and workshop. These measures aim to enhance student engagement and improve the effectiveness of religious education.
