INFLUENCE OF READING TEXTS ON UNDERGRADUATES STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN THE CONCEPTS OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS.

ABSTRACT

 This study was carried out to identify the influence of reading texts on undergraduate’s student’s performance in the concepts of respiratory systems. The research was carried out as a survey research using relevant literature from journals, magazines, books and the internet. Three research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study. A random sampling technique was used in selection of 55 biology education undergraduate students of the University of Benin. The data were collected with questionnaire instrument and analyzed using simple percentage.              

The result revealed that; reading from weblog text are important in teaching and learning of respiratory system for undergraduates, that there is a mean significant different between student who read from weblog text and those students who read biology text, indicating that there was significant difference in the mean performance score of biology students who read on respiratory system on the weblog than student who read from biology text. The findings provided the researcher the percentage of student that performed well in the test on respiratory system. The use of weblog text to study on respiratory system influences the cognitive, affective and psychomotor performance of biology students when evaluating or improvising instructional material.

Based on the results, it was recommended that the government should have the strong political will to provide fund for provision of infrastructural / teaching facilities in our universities to enhance student’s academic achievement in biology, biology teachers should be given the opportunities to attend seminars, workshops and professional training to broaden their knowledge from time to time for effective teaching of respiratory system, qualified professional and experienced biology teachers should only be employed in our schools and the government through the federal and state ministries of education should set up a monitoring team to monitor the fund provided for the provision of infrastructural / teaching facilities in university of Benin demonstration student.
