Abstract

The focus of this study is to assess the influence of Professional Training Programmes on the Effectiveness of adult literacy facilitators in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. To guide this study, for research questions were raised and answered using the survey design. Three (3) literacy centres were selected   sample of the study which were woman literacy centre, pioneer literacy centre and young women Christian Association using simple sampling technique. The findings showed that there are available professional training prorgammes for facilitators in oredo local government area. Also the facilitators are not open to refresher courses which would have enhanced their effectiveness and efficiency on the job. The research shows that facilitators are not provided with work shop to carry out their teaching effectively most especially those that deals with practical learning. From discovery it was stated that facilitators are challenged with poor societal perception and this has affected their effectiveness on their teaching jobs. Nevertheless, if facilitators are carried with high prestige there would be encouraged to adequately perform their duties as professionals.

          Based on the findings, it was concluded that the impact of professional training on the job is highly significant with the learners performance, however the facilitators should be equipped with the necessary teaching skills and aids needed. It was recommended that training and retraining of teachers should be done on regular basis, professional training programmes should be criterion for employing facilitators into the profession and polices should be made y government to formulate good training programmes for better improvement of the facilitators.
