The study investigated the influence of principals’ motivation techniques on staff productivity in public secondary schools in Delta South Senatorial District. Seven research questions were raised to guide the study, three were answered and four were hypothesized and tested at 0.05 alpha level using t-test statistics and Pearson Product Correlation Coefficient.
The study employed the descriptive research survey design. The population of the study consisted of one thousand, one hundred and sixty (1160) teachers and one hundred and forty one (141) principals in public secondary school. The sample comprised 116 teachers who were selected from 16 schools for the study. The instruments were questionnaires tagged “Influence of Principals’ Motivation Techniques Questionnaire (IPMTQ)” and “Staff Productivity in Public Secondary Schools Questionnaire (SPPSSQ) in Delta South Senatorial District. The reliability of the instruments were established at 0.73 and 0.74 respectively which indicated that the instruments were reliable. The data was analyzed using the descriptive mean statistics, t-test and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at level of significance.
The findings revealed that the predominant principals’ motivational techniques used in public secondary’ school in Delta South Senatorial District were income (salary), promotion, work condition, recognition and training. The level of teachers’ productivity in public secondary school in Delta South Senatorial District was high. The level of teachers’ motivation in public secondary schools in Delta South Senatorial District was high. There was a significant relationship between principals’ motivational techniques and Staff productivity in public secondary schools. There was a significant difference in principal’s motivational techniques based on experience and location in public secondary schools. There was no significant difference in principal’s motivational techniques based on qualification in public secondary schools. It was recommended among other things that Government should ensure that teachers’ salaries are paid promptly and regularly as this serves as motivation to teachers. Teachers should be encouraged to engage in extra-curricular activities as this is also important aspect of school programmes which could help to boost their productivity.
