INFLUENCE OF PRINCIPALS’ ADMINISTRATIVE EFFECTIVENESS ON TEACHERS’ JOB PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EDO SOUTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT

ABSTRACT

The study investigated principal's administrative effectiveness on teachers’ job performance in public senior secondary schools in Edo South Senatorial District. It sought to establish the relationship between the indicators of principal's administrative effectiveness, such as, instructional role, supervisory role, human resources management, financial resource management, communicating and evaluation of teachers and teachers’ job performance in public Senior Secondary Schools. To guide this study, seven research questions were raised; two were answered directly and five were hypothesized and tested at an alpha level of 0.05.

         The study was a descriptive survey using correlation design to determine if there is a relationship between the variables of principals’ administrative effectiveness and teachers’ job performance. The population of the study was nine hundred and fifty two (952) teachers in one hundred and thirty six (136) principals in public Senior Secondary Schools in Edo South Senatorial District. A sample of twenty percent 20% was taken from the population using the multi-stage sampling procedure and this amounted to 140 teachers in 20 public Senior Secondary Schools in Edo South Senatorial District. And 140 questionnaires were retrieved and used for the analysis. Two instruments were used. The first questionnaire was titled “Principal's Administrative Effectiveness Questionnaire” (PAEQ). The second questionnaire was titled “Teachers’ job performance Questionnaire” (TJPQ). The analysis was done using Mean, Standard Deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Fisher’s Z-test Statistics.

         Findings from the analysis revealed that the level of principals’ administrative effectiveness and teachers’ job performance were high in public senior secondary schools in Edo South Senatorial District. Furthermore, the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between principals’ administrative effectiveness and teachers’ job performance in public senior secondary schools in Edo South Senatorial District, among others. Based on the findings, it was recommended that since the prevailing administrative effectiveness of principals in public senior secondary schools in Edo South Senatorial District was found to be high, principals should further strengthen the trend by ensuring effective instructional role, supervisory role, human resources management, financial resource management, communicating with teachers and evaluating teachers. The high level of job performance should be sustained by the principal through more regular supervision of instructional activities. Similarly, the ministry of education should motivate and encourage performing teachers by giving them letters of recognition or granting them study leave to enhance their academic status.
