INFLUENCE OF POLITICAL IMAGES AND EDITORIAL CARTOONS ON ELECTORATES

ABSTRACT

This research work examines the influence of political images and editorial cartoons on electorates in university of Benin. The objectives of the study are: To ascertain the role of editorial cartoons and politicalimages on electorates in University of Benin;To identify how editorial cartoons and political images serve as an instrument for public awareness during political campaigns, To ascertain the factors that impact the reception and interpretation of political images and editorial cartoons in University of Benin. The following research questions were asked: What is the role of political images and editorial cartoons on electorates in University of Benin? How did editorial cartoons and political images serve an instrument for public awareness to the UNIBEN students during political campaigns? The study adopted the survey research design. A sample size of 398 was used.The following findings were made: electoral decisions. Editorial cartoons and political images also play a vital role in influencing the understanding of electoral processes both in and out of the university. Editorial cartoons and political images create public awareness by providing prominence for electoral candidates. Political images and editorial cartoons often use visual elements to capture attention and create a lasting impression by featuring a particular candidate prominently in an image or cartoon. The study recommends that the study of editorial cartoons be incorporated into our educational system, social activists should deploy the genres of editorial cartoons in their campaigns, especially in creating awareness on national and societal issues.And that cartoonists and communicators should tend towards promoting the art of cartooning as a tool for socio-political, and linguistics emancipation the study concludes that the primary role of Political images and editorial cartoons educates electorates in the University of Benin on electoral process, educative on political right, satirical description of political parties and for awareness on campaign schedules.
