ABSTRACT

This study was done to investigate the influence of personality traits and emotional intelligence on the academic performance of senior secondary school two (II) students in Edo State, Nigeria. Six research questions were raised and their corresponding hypotheses were also formulated and tested at a 0.05 alpha level of significance. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and using simple random sampling technique, a sample size of two hundred (200) students was selected from 5 schools in Egor Local Government Area. The instrument for this study was a questionnaire titled Personality Traits and Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (PTEIQ). A reliability coefficient value of .799 was obtained for personality traits while .698 was obtained for emotional intelligence. The questionnaire is divided into two sections (Sections A and B). Section A contains the demographic information of the respondents such as age and gender while section B to contained data about personality traits and emotional intelligence. The data was analyzed using regression analysis and all hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study results showed that personality traits (conscientiousness, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and neuroticis) did not influence the academic performance of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State while emotional intelligence significantly influenced the academic performance of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. There was no sex or age difference in the influence of personality traits on the academic performance of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Finally, there was a significant difference by sex and age in the influence of emotional intelligence on the academic performance of secondary school students in xi Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that although the personality traits of the senior students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State did not influence their academic performances, their emotional intelligence influences their academic performances. It was recommended that while school counsellors provide skills training on emotional intelligence, they should be mindful of the training offered at different ages/classes so that the students can benefit maximally from them. Emphasis should also be placed on strengthening emotional intelligence skills for both sexes
