ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the influence of peer groups on sport selection among student-athletes of the University of Benin. Four research questions were raised and four corresponding hypothesis were formulated. The study adopted a correlational survey design. The population of the study consisted of one hundred and forty (140) student-athletes in the University of Benin. The sample size of the study comprised of seventy (70) student-athletes that were randomly selected. Instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire which was developed by the researcher, and was validated by the researcher's supervisor. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. While the T-test inferential statistics was used to test the hypotheses. Findings revealed that peer dynamics, including social identity, group cohesion, and conformity pressures, shape the choices of university students in sports participation. The study concludes that peer influence is a critical determinant in the sport selection process, with implications for fostering inclusive and diverse participation in university sports. Recommendations are provided for educational institutions to consider peer group dynamics in the development of sports programs.
