ABSTRACT
This study was designed to study the influence of parental status on academic achievements of secondary school students in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.
The research designed for this study was Descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was made up of 5 public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha Local Government. The respondents were selected through the simple random sampling technique. The research instrument was the Likert Scale format (SA - Strongly Agree, A- Agree, SD - Strongly Disagree, D- Disagree) questionnaire validated by the researchers supervisor and it was analysed using the simple percentage procedure.
The study was aimed at finding out how parents economic status, parental involvement, parents academic status, home environment and the role of parents in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area. The results of the research show that students’ academic performance is determined by their parental status. The investigation also shows that parental status includes low income earners and high income earners, parents’ level of education, home environment. It was discovered that parents status affect students’ academic performance and causes dropout. Therefore, this work recommends that parents should endeavour to provide learning materials necessary to facilitate their children's learning, Parents should create time to be involved in the academic activities of their children by assisting their children in their personal reading, school assignment and also motivate them by awarding praises or gift every term as this will encourage and motivate students to be more serious with their academics, Parents should strive to make their home more peaceful and intellectually motivating for their children to learn, Parents should see their children academic as an obligation to them not as the children choice and the government should make Parents Teachers Association ( PTA) meeting compulsory. This will eventually increase or develop an effective school and home cooperation as well as the involvement of parents in the students over all learning process.
