ABSTRACT
In Nigeria, primary education commences from the age of six (6) and spans through eleven years and slightly above. The academic success of the pupils at this level require parents’ participation as this greatly influence pupils perception of the importance of education at that stage. It is of this great importance that this aimed at investigating the influence of parental care on academic performance of public primary school pupils in Oredo Local Government of Edo State. The study critically analyzes various ways parents actively involved in the education of their children and how this has influence their academic performance. To carry out the study four research questions were raised. The study was a descriptive study. The population of the study comprised of all the three hundred teachers in the public primary schools in Oredo local government area of Edo state and a stratified sampling technique was used to select a sample size of sixty (60) teachers which was 20% of the entire population. The instrument adopted was a structured questionnaire and the reliability of the instrument was ensured by using Pearson Product Moment Coefficients (Pearson) reliability computation which yielded a co-efficient index of 0.90. The questionnaires were administered and the data collected were inputed into the computer and analyzed using the SPSS: mean and standard deviation were employed to analyze the data. Based on the result of the study, it revealed that parental care greatly influence the academic performance of public primary school pupils in Oredo local government area, Benin City. Based on these findings, the following recommendations were made: awareness programs should be design by all stakeholders in the educational sector like the government, school administrators, PTA, government agency and non-government organization to educate parents on the need to actively involve in the education of their children for its great influence on their academic performance.
