ABSTRACT

 This research explored the influence of online media on the patronage of newspapers in Nigeria, focusing on the changing patterns of news consumption and its impact on traditional print media. The study employed quantitative research methods to gather comprehensive data. In the quantitative phase, a survey questionnaire was administered to a representative sample of Nigerian citizens; University of Benin academic and non-academic staff to be precise. The questionnaire accessed the participants' online media usage habits, their preferences for obtaining news, and the extent of their engagement with traditional newspapers. Statistical analysis was conducted to examine correlations between online media usage and newspaper patronage, highlighting any significant relationships. From the findings in this research, a considerable number of respondents from the sample size of the population, have a high level of preference over traditional Newspaper hard copy. Majority of the respondents prefer online media over Newspapers. Although, some level of the respondents still read Newspapers. Based on the research, it can be concluded that traditional newspapers need to undergo a revolution and utilize online platforms. Furthermore, online media platforms must prioritize trustworthiness to promote responsible journalism. From this research work, it was recommended that hard copy Newspapers needs to revolutionize and make use of online platforms. While online media has to be trustworthy in order to promote responsible journalism.
