ABSTRACT

The study focused on the influence of new media on the ethical practice of journalism. The objectives of the study were to determine the extent at which journalists are exposed to the use of new media technology, ascertain the attitude of journalist towards the use of new media in the practice of journalism, find out the major ethical challenge journalists face in the birth of the new media and investigate the influence of the new media on the ethical practice of journalism. The theory adopted for the study was the social responsibility theory. For its methodology, the survey research method was used to gather the data used for the study. Findings of the study revealed that the new media has impacted how the journalist source for revenue for their outlets in Nigeria. The findings also indicated Journalists in the selected stations believe that news stories from online sources are slightly less credible to traditional media sources. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that the impact of new media extends beyond operational aspects to fundamentally alter the ethical practice of journalism in the country. The researcher therefore recommended among other things that fact-checking and verification tools within newsrooms should be allocated to the journalist. It was also recommended that partnerships and collaborations with technology companies to develop innovative solutions for promote ethical journalism should be encourage.
