INFLUENCE OF MOTIVATION ON AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE TEACHER’S JOB PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSRACT

This study sought to do with the influence of the motivation on agricultural science teacher's   job performance in secondary schools. The preposition format was used to carry out those duties attached to the office of the agricultural science teacher at a particular period in the school system in order to realize the agricultural goals of the school. These duties do not only include teaching and learning process, but also teacher’s participation in and out of classroom activities such as inter house sports, excursions, farm activities and attending to parents who have questions about the happenings in the school. Teacher’s job performance could be measured through Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER) of teacher’s activities in terms of performance in teaching, lesson preparation and activities involved mastering of agricultural science.

It was concluded that the motivation influenced on agricultural science teachers was majorly summarized with Herzberg's two-factor theory; Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation proper utilization of the school farm and other agricultural activities. Agricultural science teachers development to a large extent and achievement of objectives and goals, influence the motivation on the performance in secondary schools.

The following were recommended: There is a need for the government to have mechanisms in place to periodically review and evaluate policies related to taking agriculture as a subject  in order to ensure they are still relevant, there is a need for the relevant authorities to give permission for further training of interested teachers, provide adequate quality materials for practical teaching and learning of  agriculture skilled topics, equip students with social skills to be able to prioritize their studies, schools to offer an environment that is conducive for meaningful practical teaching and learning, re-orientation by the secondary school of poor attitude towards agriculture and salaries should be paid adequately.
