INFLUENCE OF MOTIVATION OF TEACHERS ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

 

This study examined the influence of motivation of teachers on students' academic performance in senior secondary schools in Edo State .  Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study.

The study adopted a descriptive survey design, the population of this study was made up of 13006 students in fourteen public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. The sample of this study was made up of 100 students selected randomly from public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area.The study adopted the simple random sampling technique to randomly select from the population.The instrument to gather information is a structured questionnaire which was titled The influence of motivation of teachers on students academic performance.Section A measured the respondents’ demographic data such as age and gender.section B comprised twenty (20) item statement that were drawn from the research questions.The items were rated on a four-point scale ranging from VHE(very high extent),HE(high extent)VLE(very low extent),LE(low extent). The data collected from the respondents were analyzed and interpreted with simple percentage, mean and standard deviation, results and findings were obtained.The findings generally showed that motivation of teachers significantly influenced students academic performance in senior secondary schools in Edo state.

   To further enhance the motivation of teachers and improve students academic performance,it is recommended that teachers salaries should be paid regularly due to the fact that irregular payments of teachers salaries negatively impact teachers morale.Teachers should be promoted and in order to improve their professional growth so students academic performance can be positively impacted.seminars, conferences and workshops should be organized for teachers in order to boost their ability to perform in class and effectively engage with students.Government and school administrators should provide essential resources and support services that will boost teachers motivation and improve students academic performance.
