Abstract
The study was designed to investigate the influence of mother tongue interference in the teaching and learning of the English language in senior secondary schools of the Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State. Five research questions were formulated for the study and discussed as subheads by different scholars.
Descriptive Survey design was adopted for this study. The population of the study comprises of 19200 respondents that are from Senior secondary school 1 (S.S.S. 1) to Senior secondary 3 (S.S.S. 3) from over 12 government schools in the Badagry Local Government Area but the data was administered and collected from the 12 schools and 115 questionnaire was shared. The respondents were selected through simple random sampling techniques. The Strongly Agree, Agree, Strongly Disagree and Disagree closed ended questionnaire was used while calculated mean were used as method of analysis. The findings of the study reveals that the influence of mother tongue interference in the teaching and learning of the English language in senior secondary schools of the Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos state is at a maximum and this is as a result of differences in speech sounds and sentence construction of both languages.
Finally, solutions such as provision of teaching aids for easy learning by the students and qualified and willing teachers should be employed to teach with care etc, were given to handle the influence of mother tongue in the teaching and learning of English language in the senior secondary schools in the Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos state.
