ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of literate environment on adult teaching in Egor local government area of Edo State. In order to achieve the study’s objectives, four research questions were raised.
The descriptive survey was the research design adopted for the study. The population of the study include all the adult learners in the adult literacy centres in Egor local government area of Edo State. A total sample size of 70 respondents was used for the study. This was selected using the simple random method. The descriptive survey method was adopted as the research design while the data for the study were collected with the use of questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the project supervisor and two other experts and was tested for reliability. The test retest procedure was adopted to determine the reliability co-efficient using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient and it came up to 0.72 indicating a high reliability co-efficient. The questionnaire was the instrument adopted for data collection and the collected data was analysed using the descriptive statistics.
The major findings of the study include the fact that literacy materials are available in the teaching and learning environment of the Adult learners in Egor local government area of Edo State, the study also revealed that socio-cultural and socio-economic factors were the major factors influencing adult teaching in Egor local government area and that literate environment helps to upgrades the skills of participants and increase their chances of employment and task performance among others. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the literate environment of the adult learners stimulates and greatly enhanced their teaching. The study therefore gave a number of recommendations which includes the giving of priority to the provision of sufficient literate materials to support adult education programmes because of the immediacy of its positive impacts on both the individual and the nation at large and as a follow-up to the above, the government at all level should increase their funding of adult education programmes in order to facilitate the purchase of equipment, building of workshops as well as other infrastructural facilities for the effective evaluation of adult education programmes among others.
