ABSTRACT

This study was designed to determine the influence of learning environment on the academic achievement of chemistry students of public secondary school in Egor local government area of Edo State.The population of this study comprises of the Two Thousand Two Hundred and Eighty-One (2,281) science studentsin the fourteen public senior secondary schools in Egor local government area. The sample of this study consist of One hundred and twenty students (120) SS 2 Chemistry students drawn from five (5) public schools in Egor LGA. The purposive sampling technique was used to select respondents from the respective public senior secondary schools which made the sample size of this study. The instrument used to collect data in this study is the questionnaire titled “Influence of School Environment on the Academic Achievement of Chemistry Students in Public Secondary Schools. Questionnaire” (ILEAACSPSSQ)”. Data was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Findings reveals that quality of the physical school environment with regard to school buildings affect the academic achievements of chemistry students of public secondary school in Egor local government area of Edo State,learning environment of chemistry students of public secondary schools affects their academic achievement, and social environment affect chemistry student’s academic achievement of public secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state. Based on the findings, it is recommended that regular monitoring, supervision and evaluation of school activities should be carried out to assess participation, involvement, and understanding of the students and seasoned educationist and administrators with good reputation and experience should be appointed as administrators of schools.
