ABSTRACT

This research work is titled "Influence of Learning Disability on the Academic Performance on pupils in Oredo LGA". The major aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of learning difficulties on the academic performance of pupils. Four research questions guided this study. The review of literature was conducted under different subheadings in order to understand what had been done in the past on the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted, the population of the study consisted of all male and female pupils in all government primary schools in Oredo LGA. However, a sample size of 80 pupils was selected from the population. Subsequently, the questionnaire which was validated and found reliable by experts and my supervisor was used to collect data. The data collected were analysed using simple percentage and frequency count, mean and standard deviation. The findings of this study revealed that there are pupils with learning disabilities in Oredo LGA of Edo but it was revealed that these pupils are not much in Oredo LGA. Also, result of this analysis revealed that gender differences indeed exist in the effects of learning disabilities on academic performance of pupils. It was revealed that learning disabilities affects the academic performance of male pupils more than the female pupils. Furthermore, findings of this study showed that there's difference in effects of learning disabilities on academic performance of pupils in rural or urban areas. However, findings revealed contrary to popular belief that urban pupils receives better academic instruction which makes them perform better academically. Lastly, analysis of this study showed that teacher's competence influences the academic performance of pupils with learning disabilities. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended among others that teachers be trained on identifying these pupils, that teachers study the peculiarity of these pupils as it relates to their gender.
