ABSTRACT
This study examines the influence of classical music on the university English and Literature students’ study of drama using the University of Benin as a case study. In the course of this research, the descriptive survey research design selected for the study and simple random sampling techniques were used to elicit responses and data for the survey.
A total of hundred respondents were used as the sample’s study size. The instrument was validated and appraised using exert judgement for the reliability. Responses from the questionnaire were used to answer the three research questions that were raised to guide the research course. These research questions include: (i) What is the relationship between classical music and drama? (ii) How has classical music been distinct from other genres of music to show relevance to drama? (iii) Is there a relationship between the background and exposure of students to their interest in classical music? Based on the findings of the study, it was ascertained that there is a positive relationship between classical music and drama, the relevance of classical music is found in its distinction from other genres of music and the background, exposure and their interest in classical music have a relationship.
On the basis of the results from the research, the study recommended among others the need for facilities to fuel the interest of students, motivation of students and enlightenment of members of the society on the importance of classical music.
