ABSRACT

A survey study was carried out titled Influence of laboratory experiences on the learning of quantitative and qualitative analysis in Chemistry on secondary school learners in Warri. A statement of the problem was made, that is the practical aspect of Chemistry is not being taught well in senior secondary schools. The results obtained in this study is of great importance to learners, teachers and even school administrators, each category of individual listed can have a better understanding of the roles they have to play to facilitate the effective learning of quantitative and qualitative analysis in Chemistry. Relevant literature was reviewed under sub headings such as the concept of Chemistry, the concept of experiments, the concept of laboratories and factors that hinder effective learning of quantitative and qualitative analysis.

The research design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey research design and the questionnaire was the research instrument used to collect data from the respondents which were comprised of SS3 students in the Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State which was analysed using mean averages.

The conclusion arrived at after the study was that the influence of laboratory experiences on the learning of quantitative and qualitative analysis in Chemistry is a positive one, that is because most of the sample schools embrace the use of the Chemistry laboratory in teaching the topic of quantitative and qualitative analysis through the conduction of titration experiments & sample analysis. It is recommended that the government should play it's role in providing funds for the maintenance of school laboratories and that curriculum planners should put laboratory experiments into consideration when designing curriculums, also teachers should endeavor to become more familiar with laboratory teaching techniques.
