Abstract
The study investigates the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on career choice of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. To guide the study three research questions were raised and three research hypotheses were formulated for the purpose of this study.
The descriptive survey research design was adopted in this study. The target population of the study comprised of all public senior secondary schools one and two (SS1&SS2) students, in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size of three hundred and eighty five (385) students was used for the study. The researcher administered the instrument to seventy seven (77) selected SS1&2 students from fourteen schools in Oredo LGA. Data were analyzed by testing the hypotheses using inferentially statistics such as one sample t-test statistics and paired t-test statistics
The findings of the study reveals that neither the intrinsic factors sub-group (students’ ability, interest and personality) nor extrinsic factors sub-group (parental factors, peer group influence and opportunity) significantly influence career choice of secondary school students differently. The study also established that there is a significant difference between the mean scores of intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence on students’ career choice. That means both intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence career choice of secondary school students. The result also shows that intrinsic factors influence secondary school students’ career choice more when compared to extrinsic factors as it was revealed in the mean score. The study recommends that teachers and counselors should consider intrinsic and extrinsic factor before advising students on choice of subjects in secondary schools because this is directly related to the choice of career they will ultimately make. It also recommends that parents should get to know the implication of influencing their children to make career choice against their personal.
