ABSTRACT
The study was designed to determine the impacts of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of integrated science in junior secondary schools in Egor local Government area of Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guild the research. The study adopted a survey research method. A sample of sixty (60) integrated science teachers from JSS1-3 were randomly selected from all the twenty-nine (29) government Junior Secondary schools and from one hundred and forty nine (149) private Junior Secondary schools in Egor Local government area of Edo state. The instrument used in collection of data is a questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage. Finding revealed the following.
The result revealed that; textbooks, television, computer, charts, interactive boards, and the internet/Web Environment are predominantly used in the schools of study. Instructional Materials help to foster better retention among students, make the teaching and learning of integrated science realistic. The use of instructional materials removes the abstract nature of some contents. Cost of instructional materials, teachers will, poor technical and physical infrastructure of learning environment, and scarcity of resources on instructional materials in integrated science are all factors that impede the use of instructional materials for teaching integrated science government should make provision of instructional material and provide resource centres for teachers to get them at a subsidized rate, Also, students and teachers should engage in improvisations of instructional materials.
Based on the results, it was recommended that teachers should source instructional materials for effective lesson delivery; government should provide incentives to enable teachers to acquire instructional materials, where necessary school management should ensure that every student has the prescribed textbook (Integrated Science textbook) alongside with the workbook, school management should also assist teachers who wish to improvise instructional materials by way of supplementing the cost, if not sponsoring it.
