ABSTRACT
The study examines the influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The major focus of this study is to identify the importance of instructional materials to influence the academic performance of secondary school students.
In other to achieve the purpose of this study, five research questions were raised. The survey research design was adopted. The sample comprised of 200 students both male and female. This study used one set of response instrument which is the questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to gather information relating to the influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of secondary school students. The research instrument was validated by the project supervisor which corrections were made and later approved for administration. The response from the questionnaire after administration was analyzed using the percentage method of analysis. The results were then presented in tables.
The results of this study show that, students don’t understand always without the use of instructional materials, thus showing that a teacher who wants to see his/her students performing well academically must ensure to always teach them with instructional materials. Also, it was revealed that the use of instructional materials helps in increasing knowledge and appreciation of the subject content. Based on the findings, it can be recommended that teachers should pay more attention to the use of instructional materials for the effective teaching of secondary school students, instructional materials should be well selected and evaluated by the teachers before use in the classroom and Government should provide secondary schools with adequate infrastructures and funds so as to enable teachers have more access to instructional materials.
