ABSTRACT

This study investigated the influence of incentives on the performance of literacy facilitators in selected adult literacy centers in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. In order to achieve the objective of the study, five research questions were raised and answered. The descriptive design was adopted for the study, the population of the study consisted of all literacy facilitators working in the adult literacy centres within Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, a sample size of 90 respondents were selected for the study, the instrument for data collection was a self- structured questionnaire titled “Incentives and Literacy Facilitators Performance questionnaire (ILFPQ)”, the research instrument was subjected to face and content validity by forwarding copies of the questionnaire to the project supervisor and two other lecturers in the faculty of Education, the reliability of the instrument was determined using interna consistency reliability. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between incentives and the motivation of literacy facilitators, as well as a significant positive relationship between incentives and the performance of literacy facilitators in the study area. The study also identified strategies to improve incentives and challenges hindering facilitator performance, such as insufficient teaching materials, inadequate financial and non-financial incentives, and lack of recognition for outstanding performance. The study concludes that providing appropriate incentives, both financial and non-financial, is crucial for enhancing the motivation and performance of literacy facilitators in adult literacy centres. Recommendations include the implementation of a comprehensive incentive system, improved resource allocation, and recognition of facilitator achievements to support the effectiveness of adult literacy programmes.
